Question: I've been collecting NOS gears for my fantasy of one day restoring my RE5M to as new as possible.
I've finally got an NOS driven 4th gear (9 down, 1 to go). It has extremely light rust on it. I need a good light and my glasses on to see it. Most of it is on the sides but their is a tiny bit down the bottom of some of the valleys between the teeth. There may be some pinpricks on some teeth and given the existence of barely visible rust nearby, there is a chance that there's microscopic rust on working parts of the teeth.
I store all my NOS gears in a tub of oil. Before I add this to the bath, I'm tempted to throw it in a rust eating solution, then store it immersed in oil.
Bad idea ? Good idea ? Or, as the rust is very light, is it good enough to just toss it in the storage bath ?

Come on Wayne, you know the answer. If you throw it in without removing those microscopic bits of rust, it'll eat away at you from the inside, keeping you awake at night till you fish it out, clean the oil off then de rust it....

True, true..............but will "Metal Rescue" rust eater do some unseen damage to the hardening (or whatever, I'm not a metallurgist) on my gear ?? That'll keep me awake just as much. You see my problem, there's no win-win here for me.

I would just clean off the visible rust with some 320 wet and dry sand paper and chuck it in the oil regards Terry

Wouldn't use chemicals in case of hydrogen embrittlement, or some other form of dark metallurgical mayhem. Try some fine steel wool and then sacrifice some common Honda part to the gods. A bit of an oil bath and it should be good.

Forgot about that Hydrogen embrittlement Al, have heard about it before, just the sort of thing I was concerned about. Thanks.

I'd bead-blast them carefully if you want to get the rust off completely, then oil them up. Glass bead-blasting shouldn't go through the case-hardening, especially at lower air pressures. Even if you've got badly rusted gears it is possible to bead-blast the rust off and use them. You may expose some base metal where the rust has gone right through, but the gear should hold together fine with the remaining case-hardening in place. My H2 'box looked pretty awful until I had the gears beaded - I found that most of them were pretty good. I'll use them, change the oil regularly and if they get a bit noisy, well so be it. It's not like I'll be able to hear that much gear noise from the outside of a 750 air-cooled triple anyway

I'd get some fine steel wool, spray everything down with WD-40 & gently rub the rust off

Wayne, If you drink 7 gallons of sprite and then urinate into a ziplock baggie, put the gear in, let it soak and bury it in the backyard facing due north for 29 days starting on a full moon cycle... It will be apples mate... Seriously... I'd use the walnut shells. Just my 2 cents...

I'm with Jess. The urination idea gives the metal the right patina and look or is that peetina. American Civil war reenactors use urine to age their uniform buttons and it's a tried and true method. Jess forgot the walk around the burial spot three times doing the secret incantation part.

Wayne back to reality !!!!, I bought a fuel tank on flee bay that was said to be good !(H2)lots of money , when I got it it was badly rusted inside , I filled it up with the cheapest Vingar (no name ) , left for a couple of weeks , NO MORE RUST !!!!! very dirty vingar , put oil in , just engine oil and sloshed it around for a few weeks every day , that was 8yrs ago and it is still perfect inside ,I use vingar on any feros metal corosion , metal apears to me to come back to original from my experiance (as a mad scientist ) , and the wee stuff does cure tinnier on your toes old Aussie army treatment to piss on your feet if you have tinnier, Not that I would do that !!!!, but you do have to walk anti clockwise while weeing !!!.
