Funny that! Amazing what a difference it makes- that one has caught a few of us out!

Sorting out carb flat spot and backfiring sometimes on deceleration using this thread: re5rotary.proboards.com/thread/122/carburetor-adjustment The bike is running better with the pilot screw about 3/4 turn out but it's not as strong and smooth as I remember how my first RE5 ran back in the late 70's to early 80's.

That thread is pretty good but it is mistaken with regard to what opens first. The "35 + 8 = 43 degrees" is not correct. The PV opens slightly before the secondary throat which is blocked until 41 degrees. The port valve opens at 35. Both the 35 and the 41 are based on the same Zero datum. The thread assumes that the secondary is based on an actual zero while the PV is based on the closed position of the primary which is 8 degrees from actual zero. That's why the thread adds 8 degrees to the PV's 35. Not so. They are both based on the primary closed position which is 8 degrees. So if you like, the PV opens at an absolute measurement of 43 and the secondary is limited until 49.
It's just theory, shouldn't affect your tuning.
This video demonstrates the relationship above.

That was a great explanation, even I could follow that. Did Jess pay for the video production costs as you were advertising for him? Also, I think the dog wanted to add something to the conversation. I have one of the early Jess protractors that has some of the numbers backwards before he learnt better. Jeff

Jess contacted his Australian unit, they were 'round in no time to start filming. Trouble is, it always includes one of the dogs........

Rode around for a couple of hours yesterday with a big smile on my face. There is a very slight hesitation now and the bke pulls up hill quite well. Next project is a front fork rebuild.

As Tim Said , A rare early bike , solid oil lines and larger Spark arresters(baffles)I your pipes . What engine number ? looks like it was eating spark plugs , look forward to seeing the unit split open and fingers crossed its without and cracks or score marks . Good luck . Roger Thanks for your frame number. "RE OIL" I was thinking it may have been a earlier number than that , My earliest bike is 100626 and that dose not have RE OIL It has the dots on the start of the rev counter, dose yours have dots or solid line? Rog Obsessed with your cluster, looks like you have the only REoil on the forum Don. I would have expected the dots on your cluster as well. I've seen just one other. Tim

Still waiting on the chrome to be finished up, last time I checked with them they claimed everything was in the polishing room and check back in a week. The initial estimate had everything done by mid February.
Still riding it though, so far the longest run has been a hour and a half. Tis good to be out and about on it, it will be nice to have better looking exhaust and turn signals.

I'm still waiting and hopeing the guy does your exaust nice and as cheap as he said he would do them for. I took a bunch of fenders and crash ars and engine covers to a chrom shop and he did alll the work him self but his tanks where to small so he sent the exaust to a friend of his shop in Texas. I got all my parts and engine covers back in 3 weeks and so far his work looks great to me. I can't wait to put the chrome covers on one of my bikes. I hope the chrome does t hold to much heat like a few people have told me they will. I'll find out. Ext week and let the world know about the temp difference. Have a great weekend !

Great thread, very motivational. lf i may be so bold as to say, i would not use old brake pads and shoes, i have seen a shoe de-laminate before literately just peeling off, would have been ugly at speed.

Thanks for the words of wisdom. I do need to get new brake shoes and install them in the back wheel. Riding the bike a couple times a week on local errands and want to take it down to Jess's house when the mufflers and turn signals finally get done and installed. Figure it's time for new tires then too.

My current rides, two 09 Victory Visions and the RE5. Installed the turn signals today, I'll post some photos the next few days.

Thanks Jess, you and members of this board have been a huge help.
Next up is dealing with rust in the fuel tank. Tried some over the counter rust remover and then rolling pebbles around in it and that didn't work well. Thinking about trying electrolytic next or may just coat the inside.
