Had a firemist red model M with touring pack back in the late 70's to the early 80's.Sold the bike to my dad who sold it to a friend and the last we knew of the bike it was in Michigan. I regretted selling the bike and have been watching them over the years. Had an opportunity to get one at a good price and decided to take the plunge. Met up with seller in Alabama and got the bike back to Tennessee for under $500.00. The motor is locked up and the bike is in rough shape to say the least but the good thing is that Jess is a couple of hours away. I sprayed some PB Blaster on the plug and a bunch of bolts so I can pull the plug and exhaust to see if the rotary will free up. I've brought back to life several Yamaha XS 1100's, a 750 Secca, GL-1000 but this one is in rougher shape than any of those bikes were. I appreciate the things you folks have done with this forum, downloaded the service and parts manuals, read a ton of threads and am looking forward to working on the bike.

There's whats left of a mouse nest up in that front headlight. Looks like it was laid down on the right side, that peg is bent up a bit.

Don,
First... Well bought. Just the M parts alone are worth far more than what you paid.
Just a thought... Now that you have all the M stuff.. Find a rough cosmetic good running bike and do a swap.
Just my 2 cents.
Best,

Thanks Jess. I appreciate the sharing of knowledge, commitment to these unique motorcycles, and time/effort you and others have made to this website over the years. The least I can do for this bike is put some sweat equity into it.

So looks like there has been water in the carby? Could point to the reason for the engine lock up. That might be a very big problem- if the seals are rusted that will be a PITA!

I agree with Jess, that bike was well bought.
However: "There's whats left of a mouse nest up in that front headlight"
If what Andy thinks might be water damage in the carb was actually caused by mouse urine you may have very severe pitting in some of the aluminum.

Ran into an opportunity today. The butterfly valve on the front of the motor is frozen in the closed position. Hit it with PB blaster and am letting it soak in overnight. The screws on it are stripped out too. Any suggestions to unstick it?
Carb is cleaning up nicely with no pitting in it. One of those butterfly valves are frozen too but I can take it apart.
