A simple guide to a new owner ....Always run on premix ...add 50ml+ of two stroke oil when filling fuel tank ....check the oil tank usage by putting a tape line on the side of the tank and you should notice a drop in level after say 50-100 miles.. blank off the drive chain oil feed from the oil pump as this will make checking oil usage to lubricate the Apex seals impossible and leave oil on your drive when parked also ...Always check the coolant level daily this should be at the bottom of the filling tube ....please note the temp gauge sender is fitted at the top of the water level table and if short of coolant the temp gauge will go down not up ....Always use a water pump lubricant .....use a light oil in gearbox as the sprag clutch does not like 20/50....any tick tick sound from the engine could well mean a proper unit problem ....have this checked out ...Am sure there is more that could be added to this thread .....Glenn..... I'm not sure why that says to add two stroke oil. It's perhaps a simple error, I don't know. I would definitely add Castrol classic and not two stroke. With the former, you've got an absolute known "quantity", no arguments about its efficacy.

I do not want to start an oil debate. It is tiresome.
First caveat... I am not a chemical engineer nor a material engineer
Rotary engines are not a two stroke. While two stroke oil may work perfectly well, until a few years ago the largest rotary engine rebuilder in the U.S. reccommended Castrol for their engines.
it works, it's cheap, and here in the U.S. It is available almost everywhere.
I genuinely wonder why anyone would use anything else. I won't.
That said, to each their own.

I stated to use two stroke oil for premix for the simple reason this will maybe mix with the petrol easier when added direct to the fuel tank ...and not given a good shake in a can ...also you can buy small bottles in any petrol station when on the road ..added to that its a clean burn oil not that it matters much on the millage we do on these bikes ....Your bike will not fail due to the what is seen as the wrong oil in this thread but the lack of oil ...I would focus also on more on any sign of overheating on start up and general running ...make sure your stat opens up to let coolant to the rad ....I tend to leave the stat out for the first start up then its one less thing to worry about ....read up on testing the stat for the correct opening temp ...dropping in boiling water as a test is no good ....

I think more to the point when instructing people new to the bike, we should stick to something that is 100% non-contentious and guaranteed safe.
Castrol was recommended by Suzuki for the RE5, two stroke oils were not. They may work, but putting up opinions against a factory recommended product which is everything that's claimed, cheap, readily available and totally safe makes no sense.
Once a new owner is up an running, they can experiment all they like.

Castrol oil is more linked now to old garage signs and old oil tins in the UK and they sell for good money ....very few stock it anymore ....Many Other well known suppliers make classic oil for bikes and cars like comma ....Also we are talking about running the bike permanently on premix in addition to the metering oil....not sure if Suzuki recommended that at all .....By all means stick to what is recommended in the side tank but with premix i use two stroke oil for the reasons stated already ....but its your choice ....

Once again, you're just talking opinions Glenn. Do whatever you want, but when giving advice that is so obviously contentious on the board, place the caveat that it's your opinion. And always running premix is very much, just an opinion. Especially when it's two stroke oil.
So to clarify, it's generally accepted a reasonable idea to make a batch of premix prior to the start of a long layup engine. Mix 1:100 (the same ratio as the bike's metering pump puts out to the engine) into a couple of litres of fuel prior to the first start as a safety backup. Once you've established that the metering pump is working (simple test outlined in the manual), then you can run the bike without premix as the factory intended as, I believe, the vast majority of owners do, or take precautionary steps as you see fit.

I think its time to move on ....For all we know Castrol could well have paid Suzuki to recommend there oils ...This is common practice ... Maybe they supplied oil to them at the time to re-brand as Suzuki oil ....If so 40 years later there still laughing ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK ....just my opinion ...as always just trying to help RE5 owners .....

Castrol is recommended to be used in the oil injection tank, I don't know that Suzuki ever recommended it as a pre-mix did they?
Because 2-stroke was made to be dissolved in fuel I suspect it is possible that 2-stroke will stay mixed with the fuel for a longer period of sitting while standard crank case oil might drop out.

If that's not available then I sometimes use Drop Bear oil but the bike gets a bit feisty and wants to climb the nearest Gum tree and wait for an unsuspecting postie bike to attack. Gotta be careful of those Drop Bears if you ever come down here... australianmuseum.net.au/drop-bearSome more sage Aussie advice there...
