I found that the chain drive L Model Suzuki 750/550 shocks will fit and work well on the RE. They aren't as tall as the standard 1000 shock and they have the chrome spring cover so they look more correct.

Excellent. Are those the rebound damper adjusters? The std GS-1000 shocks weren't as long as the 77 GS-750 shocks and the 1000s, improved valving. Those look stock, even I would be happy.

Yes they have the adjuster wheel under the rubber cover at the top.

View Attachment What year GS and models are you talking about "L" in Suzuki is 1974, a Suzuki part number would be good as well as the only eye and clevis rear GS shocks I can find do not have shrouds. Found it 1979 GS750 LN part number 62100-45220 and they are as rare as hen's teeth. Regards Stuart.

The US had L as in Low Slinger ( Cruiser ) models. We also had GS-750T as in traditional, with drum rear brakes. I'm sure Rotorious can clarify further

Any eye to Clevis Shock made in the last 20 years is an improvement over the stockers.
The stock shocks were crap when they bolted them to the bike. 40 years has not done them any favors.
If one is a taller fellow and does not have leg issues a 13" replacement shock of whatever flavor is a worthwhile addition. Make the bike handle well and is much easier to put it on the center stand.
Just my 2 cents.

I like the slightly taller shock myself. The 1000 L shock as shown is shorter than the standard 1000 shock but still taller then the original RE unit. The 750 L shock is a little shorter bust still slightly taller than the RE units. Jess recently put some shorter shocks on 1210Renos bike and it did change the handling for the worse. It's not bad but feels heavier and wants fall into the turns a little. A Smaller front tire would fix that though for those who need the bike a little closer to the ground. I did a lowering and a GS1000 suspension conversion for Timpa136's wife's bike a number of years ago with a 16" rear wheel and it turned out to be one of the sweetest handling RE's I've ever ridden.
