Hello, 1 month ago my re5 was ready. I bought it a non runner and it took 2 years to restore and put it back on the street. First day after riding for quite some time, it didnt start, and starter motor blocked. I opened it and the armature had exploded. Search the blog but didnt find this bit... Fitted a new starter and it lasted for for another day... same thing happened. So now i need another starter and some starter clutch parts. Anyone has a spare starter?

Where are uou located ? Jess would probably have some in the US. I have a few in the UK. I would ask myself why 2 Motors have burnt out ? They would normally flattern the battery before they get too hot.

I would ask myself why 2 Motors have burnt out ? I can answer that - The sprags in the clutch locked up, spinning the starter to oblivion. A replacement starter will not help. As a temporary fix, get a thick short bolt and a nut (and appropriate washers). Plug up the hole in this starter adapter with this assembly (into the piece on the lower left of the picture). Screw this New! Improved! assembly back on your RE-5. You are now going to get good at kick starting your bike. Practice, practice, practice. Leave your Last Will and Testament with your Back Doctor. It kept my bike on the road for those last few years of riding my RE-5. It was REAL tough getting up and out of bed this morning. Charlie

Thanks for the answers, although i didnt explain myself well. My engine is brand new rebuilt with great compression, and starts immediately. First time it happened, i was going around and stopped several times. Last time i stopped at Cafe and when i was going to leave, pushed button and "click" the starter didnt move. At first I thought it was bad connection at battery or the relay / solenoid. Only when i open the starter i saw its huge damage. Then i exchanged some messages with Michel, who had rebuilt my engine and he too thought one spline became loose or something and broke the whole thing. After that i Bought a starter motor from Ebay, in the USA, fitted it today, and engine started almost immediately, and exactly same thing happened... Went around for quite some time, stopped several times , and then when i stopped at gas station and tried to leave, pushed started button and nothing happened, just the "tick sound from the relay..." - starter blocked again. I push started and it fired immediately. But when leaving gas station in first gear, this time i heard, for a few seconds the sound of the starter motor engaging. Pulled the clutch immediately and it disengaged... I continued to friends house half a mile away, very slow, and it happened 3 or 4 times during the way... Again took starter out and the armature literally exploded again. This time i understood the starter had spun much faster the it should. So i started searching for the cause. I tried the kick start but my 79 kg were not enough to rotate. So definately i need a starter , and probably some starter clutch parts.

The starter on the re5 is a very robust unit...
I agree with Charles that your problem lies elsewhere. The starter sprag is a good place to start.
Best of luck and let us know what you find.
Best,

Qwik Note --
I went to E-Bay and noticed that there are several sprag clutch units for various motorcycles, esp. Ducati. ***There was a used unit for a Suzuki SV-650***. I have NO IDEA if it would fit or not and am not advocating buying anything.
I am currently not near a major Suzuki Dealer (or Syd's Cycles Ducati for that matter...) but maybe, maybe, maybe baby someone could look and see.

Certainly looks like the starter clutch/sprag has failed or been installed incorrectly and grabs the starter motor gear and spins it with the clutch basket as you drive the bike. That will destroy every starter you put in the bike.
Exhaust off, clutch case off, primary chain off, clutch basket off and have a really good look at the starter clutch/sprag on the inside/gearbox side of the starter basket. It should allow the gear on the back of the clutch basket to grab one way and spin freely the other way. If it's locked up both ways then you've found your problem.
Good luck!

I E-Mailed:
GMN BEARING USA, LTD 12633 Shiloh Church Rd | Houston, TX 77066 T: 281-858-7000 | F: 888-858-8678
I got the E-Acknowledgment and will probably be in contact with them tomorrow. If anyone lives in Houston with an RE-5 clutch basket just sittin' around, maybe you could go into the office and show'em the clutch basket with the sprags. Mebbe this time, something will work out.
So:
1. Check out the SV-650 sprags from Suzuki Parts Catalogs or perhaps get to a Ducati Shop and see. 2. GMN Bearing or similar.
3. I doubt that the licensing from NSU to Suzuki went as far as clutch baskets and sprags but there may be a connection to German Parts somewhere.

PS: Another part of the sad story for me was taking my fragged starter to a starter repair shop. The Starter Guy recognized the TYPE of starter. The Base of the starter was evidently common. The ADAPTER end-piece was what was different and he could not find a part number for that piece. He disappeared off the face of the earth soon after so I do not know the common Starter Base.
MORAL: Do NOT throw away the adapter for the RE-5 NO MATTER HOW JUNKED THE STARTER WAS. The Base may be used in a thousand different Tractors/Lawn Mowers but if we could find the Base starter, we could at least screw the adapter to it and have a working starter for our RE-5s.
