Hi guys
My clutch basket has a loose band around it, and the dimples on the band have begun to wear away due to the band wriggling around. I've seen a couple of threads where the band had been welded back on with mixed results, but what are the thoughts on spot welding the band to the basket, rather than MIG / gas welding?
cheers

Without going out of your way to buy one and you already have one in the shop I'd say go for it. With minimal heat transfer there would be less of a chance of warping. Although if you do it properly, you could do a far better job with a TIG or possibly a MIG/Gas.

One of my bikes had that band come loose. It looked like it had been that way for a long time. I figured that it must have not done anything really important so I left it out. That clutch basket is pretty stout, it couldn't possibly been in there to keep the basket from expanding. My other Suzukis don't have that ring. I have had zero clutch related problems since I removed mine.
I think my loose ring was actually spinning on the outside of the clutch basket as the dimples were wore off. It was cutting into the clutch cover. If you look at it, it just snapped onto the clutch basket. It doesn't make any sense. Possibly it was some sort of counter weight to balance out the clutch assembly??

I mig welded mine with very small welds and it had been fine. I'd rather leave it in than take it out- there must be some reason for it.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, but hopefully I have solved the problem? One of my spare clutch baskets had a broken spring which rendered it useless but the band was mint, so I cut the four fingers off the basket which had the bands dimples engaging in the holes. This allowed me to easily slip the band off the basket, and with a few careful wacks I was able to slide the band onto my original basket which had a broken band. The replacement band now seats snug in place and looks 100% original.

Good to hear that. I will keep my old clutch drum for an emergency, perhaps the welding can be ground off and used w/o the band.
