I use the motobatt mbtx30u not the mbtx30uhd and it fits in perfect. I also use the motobatt gel batterys in my Norton commander and my ducati darmah and they also crank the engine over at a higher speed my ducati was always very lazy even with a new lead acid battery you can buy a decent battery charger for about £30 that will charge gel or lead acid etc here in the uk.another advantage of the motobatt is it has 2 negative and 2 positive terminals so you never have to worry about buying a battery with the terminals the right way round regards mike

As a newbie this thread and basic questions list will be extremely usefull to a new owner of an RE5 like myself for quick reference advice and to what other alternatives can safely be used other than Genuine Suzuki Spares,... Saying that though im learning quite a lot already about the bike from reading past forum posts the whole forum is a wealth of knowledge for new RE5 owners.......

Another thing that might be useful is the options/opinions for the final drive chain. The original 630 or a conversion to 530. I have spent a while trying to decide whats the best option. Having never rode an re5 I dont know how noisy the OE chain is. From the info on this forum it looks like the original can make more noise than a 530. And the 530 is available with more options. Having spent a few hours looking at the 630 chain/sprocket sets or a set from JT for a 530 I just cannot decide whats the best.
I guess there are pros & cons for a 530 conversion. Is there a particular reason to chose one over the other.

There is no weight advantage to speak of. Some argue that there is less wear/stress on the chain and sprockets as the weight of each individual link "turning the corner" as it rotates around the sprockets is less and therefore better (there's just more of them). I think the main reason is simply that there is a much bigger range of quality 530 chains about and the sprockets are aplenty and cheap as chips.

SuzukiRE5, our board administrator has created a new folder in Restore and Repair labelled FAQ.
I'll start putting posts in there to cover all those FAQ's. If you have any ideas and/or suggestions, could I suggest that you reply to this thread and we'll keep the FAQ folder as clean as possible with established and workable solutions.

"The specified rotary engine oil is of SAE 10W/40, has its ash content limited to 0.65 weight percent in order to minimize carbon fouling of the spark plug and combustion chamber."

One other quick note. There was (supposedly) a Suzuki Service Bulletin sent, which I don't have, detailing a conversion to battery and coil ignition in the event of a CDI failure. I was given a photocopy of the TS-250R ignition as a guide. The copy is very light and I don't think I could Scan it and Upload it in a readable form.
NONETHELESS! Someone might know of it and find it and make an easy Summary for the FAQ. History 'n all that.

Stuff that works, in my experience... A massive, heavy, expensive battery is NOT required - a modern AGM (sealed) battery in the same size as what's used in a GT/GS/GSX strapped in to a corner of the original battery box with a zip-tie or equivalent will easily start the bike. And, because it's the same size as a GT et al, it can be swapped if needed - no point having a massive battery that only fits one vehicle AFAIC. For Aussie owners, a RYCO Z386 oil filter works fine. IKON rear shocks are a vast improvement over the OEM shock(er)s... Pirelli Sport Demons are a great tyre, but do not look 'period'. Do you recall the rear shock spring rate? Is there a choice? Is that a progressive spring or two separate springs? Thanks Tim

Since our Air Filters are so extremely important to long engine life, please make sure your preference is listed here for Wayne to compile. I have listed my choice earlier in this thread. I have checked with K&N and they weren't interested in making an air filter as a direct fit for us.

I have been trying to find out what the tool kit for the re5 contained. Its p/n is 09800-00144. But I have not found what it contains. My re5 came with a bundle of tools and I think they are part of the originals. Is there a list somewhere showing what it came with. Not sure if its a FAQ but nice to know.

Yes, that's right, the Exedra. The standard GL1800 rear tyre is an Exedra G704 which is a 60 profile. To get more ground clearance I started using Exedra 70 profile tyres but in both cases they are not made for the weight of the GL and scrub out or flex too easily (the Dunlop Elite equivalent is the most demonic wet weather tyre I've ever ridden bar 1975 IRC's so won't go there again). Then they made an Exedra G850 specifically for the 'wing. Brilliant. High profile, more ground clearance, didn't feel like you're riding on an inner tube filled with jello (compared to other hi profiles)...............and then they stopped selling it over here. There was a brief time when it was cheaper to buy a pair of tyres in the US and have them Fedex'd over here. Long gone I'm afraid. Just thinking back, my recent riding around the RENO areas, the 1977 era, IRC GS-11 AW tires picked up the rain groves on a portion of interstate. The 1977 era tires are an improvement overall over our original equipment INOUE or Bridgestones . I had forgotten rain groves with more recent tires. The IRCs were tested and originally made for the GS-750B and later a v series for the GS-1000 if my memory serves me. The IRCs handled pretty acceptably on our fun tour around the area that day.
