Hi All,
My RE-5 has been getting a sticky clutch when cold lately. The oil (correct type, 20W-50) is maybe a year old but only has a few hundred miles on it. I guess I should change it.
Anyway, after I start it up I have taken to getting a few MPH by gravity before I put it in first. I get a pretty big clunk if I don't. Once I warm it up all is well.. When warm full clutch has pretty much no drag and works great.
What am I looking at here? If I need new clutch plates, where to get them?
As usual, thanks for the advice!!
It's been such a nice summer in Cincinnati that I've gotten more riding in than usual. It's usually hot and humid.

Dave,
Nothing wrong with your clutch. Using Castrol 20-50 in your trans will work... but there are better oils to use, only in the transmission.
I prefer bel ray straight 85 wt for the trans. I have not had luck with the multi viscosity bel ray. It will cure your clutch stiction problem, and make the box work a bit more smoothly.
I would run some kerosene through the trans to clean out the castrol before I refilled with the bel ray.
Just my two cents

Hmmm... All I see on Amazon (yeah yeah) is 85W/140 and 85W/85. Whatever in the hell that is. Jess, can you be more specific?? Thanks! Dave, Nothing wrong with your clutch. 85w/85. That is straight 85 weight oil.
85/140 is multi viscosity. Stay away from that they lay person answer is that multi viscosity oils change thickness due to temperature.
You should be able to get it locally at any bike shop.
But, if you prefer Amazon....
Again, let me know how it works for you.

I did change the transmission oil to 85w/85. Bel Ray. I didn't flush the old oil out.
The sticky clutch does seem a lot better.

Glad it is working better.
I think after a couple hundred miles you will notice a large improvement.
