After much scrutiny of the workshop manual i have got the throttle cable routing right and all looks and feel right....... However, and this fault/idiosyncracy was there before i re-routed the cables, it doesn`t snap closed like a slide carb would with that reassuring slap of the slide at the bottom, if i manually close the throttle the last 3-4mm of travel i do hear a click . I have tried lubing the main cables out of the twistgrip but am loath to pull the carb apart to get to the others, as it was running sweetly and don`t want to disturb. Is this just how they are or am i into sleepless nights stripping all the cables out of the carb. thanks for any advice.

You are correct, the RE5 carb doesn't snap closed similar to a bank of slide bores for example.
Everything else being OK, the service procedure for adjusting the cables stresses a closed carburetor to get an accurate 0 degree on the protractor so what you are describing may be OK. Normal idle is 6-8 degrees open so that situation you have described wouldn't affect normal running. Hope that helps

That`s great news thanks. I did find a useful Youtube video about using the protractor as well if i end up going down that route.
