A day of real mixed joy. after months of the bike sitting waiting for the bodywork to be painted, new badges to come from Australia and me to get my act together repairing the low fuel thermister it was all back together and started 2 stab of the starter button - my joy knew no limits sounded lovely, guess the Motobatt battery helped.
Now for the "but", i did have to remake all the connector blocks in the headlamp shell as being a USA bike the constant current had made them brittle and they collapsed on taking apart.
My challenge for those that understand electrics. I dont have an oil pressure light when i turn on the ignition nor does the gear indicator work. i know the bulb in the pressure light works from when i had it wired up incorrectly (too many after market white connector blocks). could it be a bad common earth? i have checked the orange wire in the connector blocks and definitely have 12v.
Please dont feel you will insult me by suggesting the obvious, i do know how to use a multimeter and have scrutinized the wiring diagram, but am now exhausted with repeated failure to cure.
Another strange one, is the tachometer works but slowly, it seems to take a time to get going, have checked cable and thats fine and i did oil it, am assuming it is a fault in the Tacho head.
So close to being on the road, i know these wont stop me, but would be nice to get working.

Oil pressure light.... The way it works is that when you turn on the ignition 12 volts is supplied to one side of the bulb and the ground is supplied by the oil sending unit which is down low on the front of the engine (by the bottom of the radiator and close to the oil injection pump). When the engine is not running you have no oil pressure and that oil sending unit is closed suppling a ground to that bulb. When the engine starts you get oil pressure and the switch in the oil sending unit opens killing the ground and your light goes out.
You need to check... the bulb (I know you said it was good but a bulb can go bad within a second after you last checked it), the 12 volt supply when you turn on the ignition, and the wire that runs from that bulb to the sending unit. You can check that with your meter and see if you have continuity from the bulb to the sending unit. I suspect this.... you may have wired it wrong in the headlamp. If all this is good then you may have a bad sending unit.
Gear indicator... do you mean the green neutral light? If you do... its the same deal... except that you have a switch on the transmission for neutral (to supply a ground) instead of a oil sending unit.

Easy stuff first, don't worry about the tach dampening. It may loosen up with driving and the alternative is a erratic jumping needle. I have one that sits on zero for a moment after startups then operates normally.
At the gear position switch connector near the battery, grounding any switch wire should light up each gear on the panel. T he neutral light is the loose blue wire. The gear indicator and oil light share the common orange b+ wire. Grounding the oil pressure switch wire should also light up the oil lamp. May I suggest a coffee break and go back at it. If the oil level drops about one half inch after starting, I feel the pressure is probably OK and safe to run.

thanks for the support, i can report progress. I found the multi pin plug under the sidepanel wasnt fully home, so i now have a gear indicator of sorts, shows first and second but nothing beyond, but if i short out the appropriate wire i get the number on the display so suspect it might be a dirty contact in the selector barrel....unless you can advise otherwise.
oil pressure light is more taxing. if i connect my multimeter between the contact on the pressure switch through to the green wire in the multiblock in the headlamp shell i get conductivity with less than 1 ohm resistance, and if i then connect a wire from the mutlimeter point to earth i get the light on, but it wont work just with the wiring of the bike. I then checked the pressure switch as per the manual and i get conductivity between the switch body and the contact on the end, as i should.the switch was still in the engine but dont think this should matter. So baffled, each segment appears to be as it should but wont work as a whole. i have check current is flowing through the connector block as well using a multimeter both sides of the block. as always appreciative of any advise. will live with tacho and hope it frees off once in regular use.
just as an aside i have used one of Jess`s spark plug converters and an R1 plug, think this really improved the ease of starting, thanks Jess.

Further update and sort of good news. I had the idea that the 6 pin socket must be causing some confusion but didnt know what so disconnected and voila, the oil pressure switch terminal to oil pressure switch body doesnt have continuity (got the right word this time), so the oil pressure switch is buggered - Damn! but a solution. now for the gear indicator.

Ian Good you have found a problem for your oil switch. your gear indicator hopefully would be like mine was full of thick dirty grease stopping the contacts and a easy fix. I have spare looms and switches if you are stuck . i will be at stafford show this weekend if you are going and wish to collect anything you may need.

new switch fitted and oil pressure light sorted digital gear indicator sorted after cleaning brass contacts in the switch down on the selector drum - Result. Thanks for all the support.
