So far it looks like a solid 25% of members are/were Suzuki mechanics, not bad!

Worked at Andrews motorcycles [Scarborough] Suzuki/Yamaha/Honda dealer from 79-84....Will always remember working 8.30-6pm inc all day Sat [Wed off ] for £25 a week at 16 ..The owner was a slave driver !!!..Still remember what he said when he went to a cafe for his lunch .."right i will go and get back" every day for 5 years ...just like his dad who once hit my my workmate over the head for not using a hacksaw right ....like wise for him finding say a washer on the workshop floor "would you leave a penny there" Happy days but took it out on test riding CBX100s and GXS100s to the limit ....Am sure they wondered why a Honda C90 had a 5 min road test and a GS1000 had a full 15 mins ...but no not a RE5 in sight ...the first one was mine a few years ago ..

Hi rog im sure your better qualified than most suzuki mechanics i bet a lot of them never touched an re5. the first one we sold at the dealership only lasted 1000 miles and came back in with no compression and went back to suzuki for a new proper unit but i put it down to the owner because he trashed it from cold .when i got mine i used to warm it up to the first mark on temp gauge before i even set off and did 10000 miles trouble free in 9 months and it went on to do about 35000 miles and i believe it is still running reg no NHE 500 R picked the number myself with working for the dealership 500 R for 500 rotary .steve w

Yes, I am still a Suzuki mechanic,(we prefer the term technician, no more money but it sounds better) The only rotaries I work on are my own, just don't seem to see any others. Just rolled over 177thousand miles and still running so smooth it's amazing!! Still working at a multi line dealership, makes the Harley guys just shake their heads.

Steve, that'd be 177,000 miles on your rotary ? Same proper unit ? No major issues or if so, please tell us. There was a recent discussion of "how many miles do they last".
Roger, I'm a few months late but who did the great line drawing ?

I worked at 3 different Suzuki Dealers in So Cal, but was not factory trained. I did take an accredited college course in MC repair. I also had automotive dealership experience. I was sales and parts at 2 of them and a Mechanic at 1.

Yes, it did roll over 177,000 miles, sounds like a lot, but it's less than 5,000 a year, as far as problems, well, it is forty years old, at 83,000 the proper failed with help from Mt. St. Helens volcanic "dusting" here in eastern Washington state, a charging system failure, primary chain and tensioner, mostly very reliable, did have a 76 with water inside the combustion chamber, by following posts on this board, I have disassembled, cleaned up and reassembled. one proper, the bike is running and driving now!!! Thanks in no small part to information from here and rotary recycle, must say a big thanks to jess and all!!!

Yes, I worked in a Suzuki dealership from 1974 until 1982 as a mechanic. Did one proper exchange under warranty. The dealership was in Kennewick Washington. I started at age 15 doing new bike assembly. There were two Blue M models in the show room when I started. I worked on about 4 different ones the two local ones after they finally sold and eventually two more would come from out of town for service ( One Blue and one Orange) as they had trouble finding anybody to work on them. One of the bikes from the dealership had the full touring kit already installed when I started. I rode the GS1100's and started Drag racing them in 1983 until 2002 @ best of 7.24 seconds / 195MPH. In the last year I found and now own the RE5 with touring kit. The original owner still had it with only 7,000 miles on the clock. The only problem was that it had lived under a tree for the last 35 years. Just about to reassemble the proper with all new O-rings and seals. All the body parts are at the painter now. Not much corrosion damage but the sun took its toll on all the plastic and rubber. I have almost all the needed parts now. I am very surprised at what I've found out there for NOS. Much thanks to Jess and Steve Silvestri for all their help. I attended Suzuki school in California 1979 or 1980 with Steve who rode his 177,000 mile RE5 from Washington.

Does owning nine of the bastards and doing all the servicing and rebuilding work on them qualify me?

Does owning nine of the bastards and doing all the servicing and rebuilding work on them qualify me? Isn't there a starting fluid that bears a striking similarity? Tim
