Does anyone know the exact dimensions and material of the 2 large O-rings between the rotor housing parts? The same question goes for the O-rings at the oil ring seals for the rotor.

Are you talking about the utterly unavailable ones that are keeping lots of potential RE5's from getting back on the road? I recently met an old school RE5 tech, from back in the day, and he has a shed full of RE5's, a number of which he believes could be runners if he only had those O-rings.... his theory, which intrigues me, is that the leaky petcocks flood the engine, resulting in hard starts, ruined starters, and damaged o-rings. All of this can be prevented with a $3.00 inline fuel valve from the lawn mower shop!

jgn, I have answered this question beore, but here is what I use for rebuild of the proper unit: Stock listed Viton o-rings: 2x 1.78mm x 120.37mm for the rotor side seals 8x 1.6mm x 13.1mm for the side housings oil channels
For sealing of the side housings I order custom made glued Viton seals: 2x 282mm x 2.0mm for the outer groves 2x 224mm x 2.00mm for the inner groves
The point where the rings are glued, is to be placed at the coldest point of the housing, which are in the middle of the inlet port.
For a rebuild, you will also need a set of tools for assembling the rotor and the side housings. I Wish you all a happy new year! Gunnar

All of this can be prevented with a $3.00 inline fuel valve from the lawn mower shop! I tend to agree..........however I find the $3 inline fuel valves from a mower shop are worthless. They do not effectively shut off the fuel flow. I gave up and use surgical scissor clamps on my RE5 fuel lines when parked. You can get them with wide flat jaws that don't really harm the lines.

Thanks for all your tips - and sorry, that I have missed the information from Gunnar in a previous note. I have measured the oil seal O-ring, and I think, that the dimension 120x2 is very close to the dimension of the old one, but I will get hold on both sizes and see, which one fits best. Also, I have found a 223x2 O-ring for the inner housing seal, without a need for gluing, so I will try this.

jgn, I have tried to use the standard 120x2 mm o-ring, but the new viton o-rings are not so soft as the original ones, so I could not press it in with the side sealings. If you are able to get "softer" Viton o-rings so that the 120x2 can be used I am very interrested. The o-rings that I have been using are all Viton shore 80.

Ok, I have ordered both O-ring sizes now and will let you know my experiences. Does anyone of you know about the special material, that is filled into the engravements of the rotor housing sides?

I have read it was called CEM ( Composite Electrochemical Materials ) this electro plating was extremely hard and was ground ( Polished ) with a grind stone to within + OR - 35 MICRONS . I think the Spyrograph patern on the side plates was ground in to improve lubrication on the side seals, this was not done on the early rotors and they would easily sieze to the sides I think this is the same problem with the early Nortons before they were Moly coted. Do people want to declare if they're bidding to make it more gentlemanly rather than trying to outbid each other? I won't be bidding purely because I have a spare set I've already made up- otherwise I'd definitely use these for a rebuild!

I use ezsniper to bid on eBay - it hides your bid until the absolute last moment and more often than not sneaks you in just over the top of the poor schmo who's been sitting on the thing for a week seemingly poised to win. Of course, I would never do that to any of the folk here, though...
