It looks like you did a nice job. That said, I have to agree with the previous poster, it just doesn't look right. Maybe it's because I've been with the RE5 since they were first released. It's a nice looking bike, but doesn't really look like an RE5. I guess we'll see how well mine ends up as it has massive corrosion as well. I just pulled the engine today.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder...
There are plenty of restored/original bikes. I like seeing a nicely done custom.
Just my 2 cents
Best

I agree with Jess, there's loads of stockers but how often do you see a custom RE5? (not the king/queen seat and a wind jammer screen version !)
This black bad boy looks as mean as a junk yard dog, I love it, well done you.

Nice ! I like the touch of knee pads on the tank amongst other things.

I get great "double takes" from BMW riders! This was really all done as a economic solution to some nasty Puget Sound corrosion.

I really, really like that blacked out RE5 -- especially the black pipes. Don't let anyone naysay you, make the bike your own! Hrm, I wonder what it'd look like with a custom exhaust and single reverse cone muffler in black...
Charles.

Since the time these photos were taken I've ridden the bike quite a bit, and the black Hi-temp POR-15 paint on the pipes has not held up too well. I've taken to just touching up the exhaust with some rattlecan Hi-temp black, while hot, after every few rides. Cheap, Simple. I also added some stainless steel panels to the tank, for the "toaster tank" look, which I adapted from a truck trim kit. This was done to hide the damage a from pinhole leak from the original emblem bracket spotwelds. I did the POR-15 tank treatment, with extra emphasis on the spot where the leak was. No problems since. Now if I can just get more than 30 mpg.....

From my experience the most common problem with high fuel consumtion is a failure in the enrichment valve. Check this valve, which is located on the very top of the carburettor. It should only open in combination with accelration and high power output of the engine. It has a very small rubber seal between the valve body and the bolt going through the activating membrane, this I have found this rotted on several carburettors.
