That is very nice. The linkage arrangement for the rear master cylinder is interesting.

Moving back to the original issue of 630 and 530 chains and their merits or lack of.......I found this on the Z1 enterprises site about 530 chain conversions for the Z series bikes, they obviously have the same problems with 630 chain...ignoring the bit about chain colours it's all pertinent. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cost savings - the 530 chain tends to work out about $10-$15 cheaper. Weight saving - this is less mass the engine has to drive - and this tied directly with HP to the rear wheel.
A third reason is chain options - you can get more colors of 530 chain, and more variety of O Ring types.
In converting, it is fairly easy to calc the 530 sprocket sizes (see below) - but then you need to match against the availability of sprockets. If you want custom sprockets, Sprocket Specialists can make just about any size rear sprocket in aluminum - the caution here is cost and wait - depending on the time of year, you can wait 3-4 weeks for a custom sprocket, and may pay $10-$15 or more over the cost of a steel sprocket.
630 chain is 3/4" pitch (or think of it as 6/8"), 530 chain is 5/8" pitch - so the simple conversion in teeth is divide the 630 sprocket teeth count by 5 and multiply by 6.
630 15 tooth front becomes a 530 18 tooth sprocket. 630 35 tooth rear becomes a 530 42 tooth sprocket. 92 link rear chain becomes 110.4 links (rounded to 110).
The sprockets are the same diameter as before, just with more (but smaller) teeth.
Often you end up with fractions of teeth - these you have to round up or down - the key here is to calculate a ratio close to the ratio you require... -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Using that formula, the standard RE5 14 - 43 sprocket set would become 17 - 52 in 530 pitch, and the 95 link 630 chain becomes 115 links as a 530. (All rounded up or down as required)
So does anyone know of readily available 530 sprockets that will fit the RE5 output shaft and rear wheel that can be bought in those sizes?

Great info Mick. Very useful. I was put onto JT sprockets some time ago, just haven't had the time to buy anything. They seem to have a large range and sprockets to fit GT750's so should (?) fit our bikes. Here is information that was posted before, I think by Tonny. These sprockets give higher gearing, I'd prefer the 17:52 that you calculate: 530 (JTF424/567 series) 16T Front Sprocket Product ID: TU24-9322 Price: $11.98 530 (JTR816 series) 45T Rear Sprocket Product ID: EM95-57145 Price: $31.23 www.jtsprockets.com/Wayne

Hi Wayne, that's a good site. My only reservation would be that I dont want to end up with a typical after market black rear sprocket that looks like it's just been stamped out....I'm unconcerned what the front looks like. In an ideal world hopefully someone on this forum might be able to point out a sprocket from another Suzuki .......perhaps one of the GS range etc that has the requisite number of teeth, the same mounting points and looks the part as well..... I notice JTs do list a kit for the GT750 with 17 - 52 sprockets, so it can be done. cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Standard-Chain-Sprocket-Kit-Suzuki-GT750-73-77-17-52T-/330617156947?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4cfa517553Again though, they say the rear may come as silver or black and the photo doesn't inspire. The object for me would be to make a conversion without it being obvious.....I particularly like the idea of a gearbox sprocket with a few more teeth, so I'm keen to do it, but finding a 52 tooth rear that looks the part might be difficult.....it's probably asking too much. December 2011: For Aussie owners, Motorcycle Accessories Supermarket, Parramatta road, Auburn is selling off their stock of NON O ring 640 chains for $50. They are longer than 96 but just cut them down, come supplied with two master links, rivet and clip.
But let them know that they do have them out the back and also that you've been told that they are $50.

Just an FYI - A very easy way to check your chain for wear is to pull up on the bottom of the chain to take all the slack out and then on the back sprocket grab a link and pull back. If you can pull the chain link up to about half the length of the sprocket tooth the chain is worn out. A new chain will stay tight against the sprocket with the slack taken out.
