The dip beam on my sealed beam unit has gone I haven't had a chance to have a proper look at it yet but was wondering if it was possible to somehow disassemble the unit and fit a standard lamp, perhaps a H4 (after removing the flange and perhaps soldering it in) as it isn't a true sealed beam in that the unit contains a bulb envelope. Has anyone done this?

Hi Ray, I've used a type (P45t) and are available in halogen and standard form. All you need to do is remove the old bulb and enlarge the hole to accommodate the base of the new bulb and hey presto. I hope your having fun on your RE5. Regards Roy.

Likewise, I separated the bulb and let it drop into the headlight, broke it with a piece of dowel and got all the bits out. Bought a garden variety halogen car headlight bulb and soldered it in place.

Like this? ? ? This is what I had in my RE5 but with an HID lighting system instead of halogen. Same company and design but a more subtle look: Both designs use an H4 bulb.

I have a Hella insert in my RE. Like this: Just remove the standard headlight and slip this in in its place. It has all the same mounting tabs and is a MUCH better light than any standard sealed beam setup - I regularly get 'flashed' by other drivers when out at night because they think I have high-beam on. And, it has a much wider spread on low-beam than any of the other OEM headlights on any of my other bikes. Is there not a US/UK company that makes the same sort of thing?

It would be OK to replace the whole headlight if I had the type with the detachable bulb, but mine is on page 29 of the parts manual where the unit is not contained in a retaining ring as in the attached pic. Attachments:
