Just read an article about an RE5M which had 2 CDI boxes fail.The reason given was a faulty speed relay not being replaced after the first box went down.Could this be my problem?Maybe I should check my vacuum switch/speed relay. Shaun. I know this is an old thread but I don't see how the speed relay can cause the cdi unit to fail, anyone got any theories on this?

A few sources to allow early CDI failure include but not limited to, an excessive battery voltage setting. Additionally a burnt out spark
plug resistor in the cap and/or a burnt coil wire end at the resistor cap.

Or letting your wife ride by herself, as in the case of Tim. Her CDI burnt. They can't be trusted. Jeff
