The bike has been sitting for many year, i really dont know how long. The seller/company only sells classic bike's, an had a lot of pre war stuff, very nice inventory! But he got this bike with a bunch of other classic bike he had bought. I think at least 20 years. maybe longer. So a lot of work to do. But first standing on the kick starter to figure out if there was compression, and yes it did. And the seller have made it running for a short time, so i knew the engine was 'good'. But you never know what to find, during rebuild... The carb has been cleaned, and a replacement gasket (can hold the ethanol) And the radiator was in a bad condition, so i went to a radiator shop to check it. It was beyond repair.. So the guy has made a new one. Got now a brand new replica radiator! Flushed the engine, a lot of debris inside. And i wanted to clean the waterpump, and i broke the impellor... Lucky that Peet has made new shafts and also had a impellor. After cleaning the primary case, new waterpump and seals, also new clutch springs it was time to build it back. And put the fresh new fluids inside.

Than it was the moment where i have been busy for: RE5 first turn to see if there is spark After cleaning the contact points, yes i got spark! Did i mention that i have given this bike a name? I call this bike Rodnie We all know what a rod is. And 'Nie' is dialect Dutch for no. Cause it have no rod Now it was time to get the bike outside after 2 years in my garage First start of the RE5 First time runner!!! But the carb adjustment wasn't good, it gives to much fuel. So many start attempts later, adjusting the pilot screw, other temporary fuel tank. Rodnie was a runner! Lots of smoke, because i have done a bit more oil in the fuel for the first start. RE5 is a runner! Later a saw a small coolant leak, but after the first warm-up everything will settle, and only had to tighten the hose-clamps Week later new try: And running better! Only if the vacuum operated valve is opening the machine stalls a bit but it wil pick-up revs. And at the end of the video, you see coolant falling under the bike. Temp meter doesnt work, and the fan switch is broken. All part of the test RE5 is running better and hot

That was in in nutshell the last 2 years.
Found a small oil leak. its the shifter-switch, see a crack in the plastic.
Nice job to repair.

Welcome Robe,
If I may extend a bit of over caution as to overheating especially the early bikes, I point a fan into the radiator if running for over a very
short time.
Week later new try: And running better! Only if the vacuum operated valve is opening the machine stalls a bit but it wil pick-up revs. And at the end of the video, you see coolant falling under the bike. Temp meter doesnt work, and the fan switch is broken. All part of the test
You say the choke helps, are you running an air filter? We on the forum realize small and sometimes big changes from the wrong air filter in place.

Hello Tim,
Put a fan in front of the radiator is not necessary, the fan switch is negative switched. So if you put the brown wire to negative, (engine in this case) the fan will run. That's how i tested the fan. Next time i will make a wire to negative, so i can turn on the fan if necessary. And a CRX fan-switch is ordered, this one will work at 95 degrees Celsius, will go off at 90 degrees Celsius. Upper limit of the Original is 106 degrees Celsius, (what i have read in the books) And my replica radiator have 43 slots, the original 38. Cooling capacity is also a bit better (if there is some wind blown through ;-)
Yes first start was without air filter. And didn't run nice without the choke. Week later with air filter, still adjusted the pilot screw, that the gas response was good in my opinion.
And have cut a piece of foam, to put in the air-box.
Indeed have read that it can make a big difference, that's why i used foam. What is the best option?

Hello Robe, Another fan turn on I use is effectively just short the two wire fan switch wires together. I haven't used a CRX fan switch and would be interested to hearing how it works when you get some miles riding Rodnie.
Indeed have read that it can make a big difference, that's why i used foam. What is the best option?
Here in the States member Jess makes a known filter that flows correctly, there may be others closer to you, pipercross?

So many RE's and GT's seem to be in Norway. You guys must get together often.
