Good for you and congrats on your RE.
Your question is a bit like, explain to me how a clock works....
That said, here are my tips....
Read the servic manual 5 times, cover to cover before putting a wrench on the bike.
Read threads on this forum until you have read them all...
If you ask a question like “what kind of oil should I use in my Re5”.... don’t be surprised if people here ignore you.
There is a great deal of information on this forum. There are many knowledgeable folks here that are willing to help....
Good luck, enjoy your bike and welcome to ownership of a very unique piece of motorcycle history.

Hi and welcome and i hope your bike gives you lots of fun.
Quick question (like Jess says, i will probably be ignored), does anyone know if over-filling the sump could give any issues? I have it on good authority that you can't do any harm, but today someone said that overfilling is bad and was adamant.

Re5Novice, You posted at one point that you had owned over 100 motorcycles in your life. I can’t be sure because the post has been deleted, I presume, by you... Show me in any of the service manuals of the 100 bikes you have owned where it states.... “put as much oil as you want in the engine sump”.... You can’t? Wow... you answered your own question. 128 to date, 129 after tomorrow (and i have worked for several motorcycle publications so have ridden every significant motorcycle ever built, pretty much), but you are forgetting that NONE were rotary engines as i have said elsewhere. I was told yesterday that because the pressure inside the engine is nothing like a conventional piston engine, oil overfilling what is harmless. Another person said it would do harm. My opinion? I fill to the mark on the dipstick but since RE5 owners had opinions 180 degrees opposed on this i simply put the question out there.

The dip stick marks on the early models was aprox 10mm shorter than the later models Presumably to enable owners to add more oil and reduce the risk of low oil damage . Some units burn more oil than others . Later service manuals explain how the later models use less oil due to improved tolerances .

Is it bad to fill it above the marker on the stick?

My bike had the sump oil filled way above the correct level when i checked it after 25 miles.

In 1980 I had a 72 Chevy Vega Kammback that still had the original motor with aluminum cylinders (no cast iron sleeves) I had my first real job working for Sundstrand Aviation (precision OD grinder, graveyard shift) I lived in the mountains about 40 miles away. I used to overfill the engine with one extra quart so I could make it to work without having to stop to add oil. By the time I got to work the oil level on the stick would be near the bottom of the low limit. When I got off work at 7:00 in the morning I would add the 3 quarts (overfilled by one quart) so I could make it home. Double Eagle recycled oil was cheap & would leave & really nice shade of blue smoke. Of course, once I collect a few paychecks the Vega headed to the scrap heap & I purchased a Ford Fiesta...

great story there!
We had vegas for pick up and delivery of vehicles with a quick hitch up to the customers car and tow the Vegas. Half of the car mileage was towed
and oh well. My neighbor had one for his wife to commute 100 miles round trip and soon it too didn't make it home.
