Hi all it has been a while since i posted anything. I am not even sure if this will get through or i have even posted it in the right place.. My RE5A has been sitting a long time and the proper unit will not turn i am trying to free it up by putting a socket on the nut at the end of the eccentric shaft but not sure how much pressure to put on it as i do not want to do any damage to the inside of the proper unit. Is there a safe torque value i could put on the nut on the end of the eccentric shaft.i have injected oil into the chambers through the plug hole, inlet and exhaust ports. Or would it be safer to dismantle the proper unit.

I would put penetrating oil in the spark plug hole and take the exhaust manifold off and do the same.
I would NOT put a socket on the crank. I would put the bike on the center stand and put it in gear and use the rear wheel as a your lever.
Just my 2 cents... YMMV

Thanks for that Jess. How long would it be before i see results of the proper unit freeing up e.g. weeks / months.

What conditions has the unit been laid up in ? If wet and damp conditions the exposed exhaust port can alloy side plates can oxidize and lift the nickasil inlay . The expose part of the rotor can rust and the exposed tip can rust and sieze in ( if this tip is visible when manifold is removed it can be lubricaded and pushed in and out with soft metal bar to free it up) The side plates could be examined using a flex optical camera. If side is corroded and you force moove the rotor this can lift some of the alloy between the nickasil inlay. I have seen this on units I have stripped that owner have forced seizures and ended up with low compression. Be pacient or strip the unit down,Don’t force it or ir could be damaged beyond repair. Each unit can be different. Just my experience. Rog

Hi Rog. The bike has been stored in a dry garage. I will wait for a few months to see if the proper unit will free up using easing oil. If this does not work I may have to strip the proper unit which has it's own problems e.g. where can I get a full set of O rings and gaskets for the proper unit only. Where can I get a set of seal ring handlers Numbers 1,2,3&4. Geo

Check out Andy’s and my own rebuilds on this site. The flat plate seal rings tools I had lazer cut from stainless. The viron “O” rings you can buy and Viton cord to make the sideplate sealing gasket rings . If your unit was good before dry storage I would hope that its ok and with no rust or corrosion and will free up without damaged .
