After having problems starting, where the plug was getting wet, I had my suspicions that there was water on the plug. Today I removed the left hand exhaust, tipped it up, and about a pint of coolant poured out of it. I'm guessing I must have a fractured outer casing in which case it looks like I'll be looking for a new proper unit. Unless anyone has another idea how coolant could be entering the motor? Thanks Ray

Could it be a freeze plug? That happened to the first RE5 I had back n 79. Freeze plug went and coolant got in the motor.

That's what Stuart said, although I didn't think coolant could get into combustion chamber from a core plug, but I could be wrong Ray

Hi Ray it will be the o rings that have perished between the side plates on the proper unit. letting coolant.
into the combustion chamber,

Thanks Steve for the info, I'll eventually get around to taking the motor out and stripping it down. O-rings sounds like a less drastic repair than if the outer casing was cracked Ray

These re5's are a worry. On my Suzuki gt750 when it has a leak I simply put a load of "Bars Leaks" in and its seals and all is well. If only the re5 was as simple.

I wish there were simple repairs on RE5s too

My early style crank seal shifting position wasn't quite so simple, low lead gas and babying it, all contributed to the pre-fire/pop back thru carb. With that much coolant, it may be just a seal situation. Good Luck on the disassembly Ray. Tim

Thanks Tim. I'll let you know how the strip down goes.
