Hey all, not sure if this is the right space to put this or not. I didn't see a dedicated intro section, so I figured this was as good as any. Anyhow, I wanted to drop in and say "hello!"
My name is Jared, and I live in the middle of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina. I'm fairly new to bikes in general, but I've been a gearhead for a long time. My motorcycle hobby started about 2 years ago when I found a 1978 Honda GL1000 for sale in Atlanta. A few months of work later, and I managed to rebuild the bike and get it on the road. 1.5 years and 20,000 miles later, it's still humming right along.
After that, I decided I wanted another bike, but something with some storage for longer trips. I found a 1985 BMW K100RS completely by accident, and did a pretty thorough restoration on that machine.
Unfortunately, that bike fell victim to a distracted driver.
My halo bike has always been a CBX. I recently found a 1982 Pro-Link and purchased that from the original owner. It's awating carb rebuilding and a general freshening-up, but it sure looks nice!
I've also had a 1972 H2 750 as well as a '74 Honda CB200T.
Now...why am I here?
I first learned of the RE5 at a vintage motorcycle show about 5 years ago...I saw one parked kinda off to the side, away from the Harleys and Indians that dominated the show. I was drawn in by the gauge cluster, and spent a bit of time talking to the owner.
I had always hoped to track one down, but each time one came up for sale, it seemed to vanish in short order. Over the past couple months, I've gotten a bit more serious about finding one, and this past weekend, I did.
There's a guy not far from me who has collected thousands of motorcycles and hundreds of vintage cars over the years. For a long time, he's just hoarded and not sold much. In recent years, he's started to let some things go. He returned my call and told me he had three...one complete, one for parts, and one NOS. We arranged to meet this past Saturday.
The NOS bike was not for sale, and even if it was, I'm sure it would have been well out of my budget. The two other bikes, however, were. The more complete '75 has a stuck motor, the '76 parts bike has a free motor. While there are some missing parts on the more complete one, allegedly he has the side covers and such laying around somewhere.
Anyway, on to the photos:
I don't actually have the bikes in my possession yet, since we didn't have time to move everything out of the way to get them out of the barn, but I'll be going back here shortly to pick them up.
I realize I'd be miles ahead starting with a running bike, but I enjoy a challenge, and I feel like it's a real shame for unique machines like this to sit and rot away in a shed.
So thanks for having me, I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions along the way to the rebuild. I need to get the CBX and a friend's Shadow done first, but once those are out of the way, I'll jump into the RE5 with both feet.
