Ok, next dumb question in the apex seal arena (may as well hijack a thread dedicated to it eh?). Does the cylinder area rust up like in a piston bike? Is there an issue of tearing up apex seals on the rusty ummmm cylinder(?) walls? This bike used to turn over by kick start like 15 years ago but now is stuck. Should I be looking at opening it up to clean the walls or is this unnecessary? It has been sealed (spark plug in) for as long as I have known the bike.
p.s. Is this manual you speak of in addition to anything in the service manual as I believe initially Suzuki did not allow opening of the engine and only replaced it as a module. I have not purchased a service manual yet but have been watching eBay.

If it's rusted solid then water must have gotten into the combustion chamber, and if water is in the combustion chamber then the water jacket around the engine is likely compromised.
You might be able to pull the exhaust manifold and see what's going on in there, if you get lots of water from there and/or see lots of rust then there isn't much you can do besides get a new motor.
You may get lucky and it's just frozen with carbon or a very small amount of surface rust from sitting a long while, lets keep our fingers crossed!

I never said I tried to do anything with it for 15 years. In fact come to think of it this bike has sat in the same place in the pole barn since the 80's (mid even..). Dad picked it up for a parts bike as he could see the writing on the wall regarding his bike. Dad picked his up new in the crate RE5 in like '78 and rode it up to 26 thousand miles. Since he mainly rode it back and forth 15 miles to work it took a while to rack up the miles. I think the last year I rode it was 1990, and I was the last one to ride it. That bike is sitting 10 feet away from this parts bike. Funny thing is this "rough parts bike" looks better then many many pictures on here of what people started with. I am thinking this parts bike saw one summer parked outside and that is it. The right tail pipe has some busted out rust around the tail and the forks and chrome have the normal old age rust on them but no where near severe as some I have seen on eBay going for over $1000 (bought the parts bike in the 80's for $100). When we bought it the guy said it had a "bad engine" but from what I am reading here, it may be totally fixable.
