There is a very good chance that RK Chains will produce another batch of primary chains (Part no. 21190-37020) for the RE5 in 2018.
They will NOT be cheap and, as each one will be hand-made, delivery will be er, 'leisurely'. (RK produced the original RE5 duplex primary chains back in the 1970's).
This order is most unlikely ever to be repeated.
Please contact me to express an interest; as this is quite a costly venture, cash will be required up-front before the order is placed.
Ideally, we need top get as close to 100 pieces as possible to make this viable, so if you could order more than one then so much the better.
Remember that these chains do stretch; mine was pretty shagged after just 30,000 miles.
Email me in the first instance please.

Thank you to those who have responded to this idea.
As I have been informed, there are close on 400 members of this forum, yet fewer than 5% of those feel that they will need a new primary chain. Perhaps they are willing and happy to pay the US$599.99 currently being asked on eBay for one NOS item? A new one, made by the original supplier RK would cost less than half that, but at present we are waaaaay short of the one hundred minimum order quantity we need to get them at this price. I so far have had orders from UK, Australia, Germany and Belgium ….. strangely not one from anywhere else. (we don't actually need 100 individuals, as the Rotary Owners' Club will be able to buy a batch of (say) 20 - 30 chains; but we do need many more orders than we have right now.)
I'll maybe give it until July before I reassess and see where we go from here.
Yours in despondency.
David

I'd love to support the buy but I've got two NOS chains and can't justify a third given the first two weren't free.

Thank you for that Stuart & Terry,
Orders (or rather 'expressions of interest') stand now around 20 …. and if we went for the price option that RK quoted for just 50 pieces, the price would go up to over £200 per chain, that is assuming that we could get another 10 RE5 owners to come in on the deal; my fear is that others who have previously said 'yes' at £160 per chain, might then decide that they are too dear and drop out.
Let's see. I shall contact those who have expressed an interest and see what the consensus is.
The alternative is to cough up the US$600 that our internet friend thinks he can get!

For comparative costs only, a new secondary drive chain here is $302 USD for original equipment endless GS-1100LT drive chain, and your primary
chain at £200 correct me is that about $270USD?. That is still cheaper than a new drive chain. One can buy cheaper chains but unless you have a
link riveter, that will probably cost you money either to buy a kit or have it done at the dealer and aft/mkt. chain may not be as strong as O.E.
When the Pri. chain starts slapping the aluminum case you may not immediately hear it and might not see it on the magnetic drain plug.
EDIT: Price now for a secondary drive chain.
27600-49210
CHAIN, DRIVE | A; 96l, #630
This part replaces 27600-37021.
Price: $421.04

Hi Peter (and others)
It is with much regret (and I can hear Jess saying now, 'Told you so!') that I think this project is becoming a non-starter.
RK, who made the original primary-chains in the 1970s, were willing to make another batch of 50, but at a cost of around 260 Pounds Sterling each. Even with the UK's Rotary Owners' Club being willing to bulk-buy 30 pieces, it has proved impossible to get enough support from present RE5 owners even to get into double figures for the remaining twenty!!! It's sad, but unless a couple of people come forward and say 'Put me down for 4!', then I cannot see how this project can proceed. I am grateful to those few who did express an interest - but sadly you were too few in number. In the years to come, as your hear your worn chains grinding away inside your aluminium case, you may wish that you had bought one …. but sadly, not enough folk were willing to look that far ahead.
