Well the bike certainly was topped up with oils before riding, as it's part of the riding routine... as is the warm-up time. I certainly don't trust any of the oiling systems and I always run a mix of 100:1 in the fuel. It was only a 15min ride but I was certainly surprised when the oil light started to flicker....Good thing I was close to home. Anyway I've found the spare LHS bearing and housing, still looking for the RHS. Sizing it up I'm guessing the bearings are the same for both sides.. getting it safely out of the housing will be fun. Better get this casing split soon and see what really went on.

Steve are you sure that the plan bearing is the same on both sides? Guido

Could be wrong yet Guido, still looking for the RHS spare bearing. But I did slide the LHS onto an old esentric shaft and it fits both ends and seems the same width. Housing is obviously different. Haven't consulted the book yet to check part No.s

Well, split the casing yesterday. The RHS gasket seemed fine.. no obvious gaps or blow-outs.
I blew air into the oil holes in the casing as you mentioned Guido - no noise through the rotor seal.
Took the bearing housing off and blew air through again - all clear. I then put the bearing back on and it sealed well once again with air......
The plain bearing has starting signs of wear - ( no Oil) possibly slight damage done in the last few minutes of running or old wear.. (I just can't remember the condition of the seal when rebuilt.)
The oil seal for the bearing was new on rebuild and still looks fine....
Running out of options...
Still need to tear down the oil pump in the casing to see it the oil pump seals are OK...

Hi, I whish you all the best for 2017, after longer discussion with my friend (owner of a NSU RO 80 Workshop) we dicided to open the proper unit. We want to see if all bearings are o.k. and no other Problems are located in the proper unit. My friend has restored many RO 80 engine and see no big issiue in the work for the RE 5 engine. I will report and show fotos from the work. Here only two Picture from disampling the unit. Best regards Guido

Update, On saturday we open the proper unit. The plan bearing on the left side is also damaged. The rotor and the rest looks really in good conditions. My workshop say looks like an RO 80 engine after 10.000km. We will now change all sealings, clean the excenter shaft and change the damaged bearings. Here some fotos from the open unit :
Damaged bearing
Very innovativ support for the RE5 engine
Best regards Guido
