Okay so here's the back story. I recently bought a '76 RE5. that had been sitting in a garage since 1997. I Cleaned it up brought it home and Pulled the carb cleaned it out very well put it back on after soaking the intake in WD40 while turning it over and letting it sit for a few days. Then I reinstalled the carb and tried to fire the bike with 50:1 mixed fuel in a handlebar tank. The bike will fire once or twice but never start. I found that if I put my finger on the bottom of the choke butterfly and hold it shut as hard as I can it will run for a while but die after 20-30 seconds. Ive searched for air leaks but haven't been able to find any. Also when the bike is running you can not open the throttle or that will kill it. all of the passages in the carb are clear. what am I missing? I want this thing to run on it's own! Help please!!!! Thanks, Jason

The little jet at the bottom of the carb, accessed behind a bolt just below the intake elbow? I have forgotten that one a couple times when trying to sort out issues and at least once it turned out to be a piece of sand in that jet.

If it's been sitting that long and the carb wasn't drained, the only way to really clean it is with an ultrasonic cleaner or 4 days in actual, industrial carb cleaner. Pull it out on day two, rinse, blow everything out and soak for 2 more. Pretty sure that it's still got crud in the passages. Some are teeeny tiny. lol

What is the value of the main jet? (The little one behind the bolt talked about above). Mine ran like a toilet and would not take any gas until I enlarged the jet. I would start there. I think the jet size is around 100 to get it running right. I did not use an ultrasonic cleaner but I would like to try that on my other RE-5's.

Cleaned both jets behind the bolts and she runs on her own now! the only problem i am having is a dead spot in the mid range. it falls on it's face then rev's out like it should. what should I focus on for this new issue?

Oh... the flat spot.... If you find a sure fire way to completely eliminate the flat spot let us all know. Its a common problem and very few people completely get rid of it.

Remove your primary jet which is located under the brass nut where the air horn bolts into the carby face. It's probably a 90. Replace it with a 100 jet.
If there isn't a significant improvement in the hesitation, then there is nothing for it but to remove the carby and do it all properly. Ultrasonic clean, full bulletin 8/9 set up.
Remember that even if the 100 jet works, it's a bandaid fix.

Here is one I have used at the recommendation of another board member here. Edit: a belated thanks to toystoretom for the recommend as they are reasonable and jet description helps pick the right one and they rush shipping, too. pjmotorsports.com/
They are based in the US.

Hi Wayne, Where did you find 100 jet? Hi Jean-Denis, sorry for the slow reply, I've been away for a couple of days. See this web page. They are in Australia but will ship. The link will put you on the Mikuni Carby page. Select "JETS" from the list in the blue index box. Scroll down a little bit to the N102/221 jets. That's the type you want in 100 size. Buy some sizes around that as well if you can afford it. Say a 95, maybe a 102.5 as well. About $10 AU each I think. www.showandgo.com.au/mikuni/mikuni.htm?mikuni_bf.htm~mainFrame

I had to keep going and ended up with a 112 jet before the flat spot dissapeared, and the carb had been completely overhauled beforehand. If you go any bigger it will start without the choke but fuel consumption will be heavy. One of these days I will have to strip it down and find out exactly what the problem is. Regards Stuart
