Just bought a 1975 RE5 from a storage unit where it's been for the last 30years. Owners were cleaning out a unit that stopped paying months ago and posted a 1974 RE5 with 16724 miles on craigslist. Still has the 1986 plate with insurance and registration cards. Came with 2 service manuals with all the bulletins, 13 qts of round old oil cans. Some aftermarket bags, trunk, Windjammer faring, even the tool kit is still there. Cleaning it all now. Soaking the rotor for a bit before I try to do a compression test. This forum has been great to look into the bike so I can get an idea of what is inside of things before I rebuild or overhaul them.
Thanks for the help so far.
Pictures will follow once its clean and presentable.
Is there a registry of RE5's?

Congratulations !
What's your frame and/or engine number ? There is a registry but I don't have a link, just the hard copy. It'll place your bike in the timeline at least.

Nice find! You must have been quick- they tend to sell as soon as they appear on Craigslist these days. There was one a buddy of mine spotted the other week- $600 and I couldn't even get to the advert as it was gone already....

Yep, that's the one. I use SearchTempest for searching craigslist. You can search all the craigslists over a massive area. Story goes that they tried to sell the bike last year but didn't have a title, and Michigan told them that there wasn't enough information of the VIN to get a replacement. Well, going through the bike when I got it home, I found the insurance and registration from 1985 and the VIN on it that the state used last time to register it. Wasn't a problem at all.

Trying to get a title history through the state, but I think this is even a one owner bike, and was sold in this area 10 miles from my house. Kind of interesting.

Nice bit of history and good to hear that getting the title is sorted! Good luck with the recommissioning...

IT RUNS!!!! NOISE! SMOKE! MORE COOL NOISES! Fired it up last night on pre-mix after rebuilding the carb. (I still think I have to re-check or re-rebuild it, and set all the cables) Lots of compression, and sounds awesome with the pipes off the bike. Work has been crazy busy and not letting me have more than 30-60 mine here or there in the evenings when I get home. Its a fight between other projects, RE5, and sleep for my time.
Now that it actually fired, I'll recheck compression (see if it went up any more), but I think its time for restoration mode over the next year. I'll be sure to get in touch with various people for parts or knowledge as work goes on. Thanks again for all the help so far.

Had a 75 Firemist with touring pack I sold to my dad in the early 80's. He lived in Indiana and I was here in TN at the time. He sold it to someone in Michigan and I've wondered what happened to it. I had added a stereo to one of the side bags and speakers on the fairing windshield. It also had a nice touring seat.
Come to think of it, next time I'm at Jess's I need to take a closer look at all the RE's he's got in the back of the shop!!
