As with many bikes the fan only comes on when temp close to red line,Ive heard that other classic bike owners fix up a switch on the bars so that they can turn the fan on at any time when stuck in traffic etc to keep the temp down, Anyone done this on a RE5,?Am going to do this on mine as it gets so hot in uk !

Glenn, Your bike is not set up write if it running too hot easily . check your timing, metering oil pump and your carb air mix. all the info found on here and in your service manual.

]High humidity really makes the RE5 feel hot too. Anyone done this on a RE5,? I did just that on my first bike mostly before the intake to carb spacer was available and I was fighting vapor lock.
Just hook up a switch to connect together the two wire fan temp sender wires to themselves and leave the wires connected so the switch will still function as designed.
The fan should cool it back down fairly quickly and shut back off.

To be honest my bike runs to cool as ive had to take thermostat out as it only opens in boiling water when i tested it and when fitted on the bike it ran hot but the bottom hose was cold,Yes i will get round to testing it as per book but looking out for a new one anyway,It only goes close to red when stuck in traffic say for 5- 10 mins,Was just talking to a mate the other day about bikes and his view was the fan cuts in late on bikes in general and for the US market they like there bikes to run hotter than we do in uk, Just beer talk ?

Glenn,
May I suggest running with out the thermostat could cause an engine failure and engines aren't cheap as the ones on e-bay show. You certainly don't want it to overheat, ever. May I suggest a few additional things after checks Rog. suggested. Use a citrus based flush if needed and let cool at least 4 hours before refilling. Check the water pump cover for scoring or galling that could affect the impeller clearance. Check the water pump by-pass in the top radiator hose outlet, the one with the 3 screws and don't cover it with silicone gasket maker for example. The thermostat is a critical component to maintain even engine / proper temperatures .

Thanks for your advice,Just to say i dont have a problem with the bike,The temp needle was always in the centre when warmed up until a few weeks ago then it would be far over to the right,Ive taken the stat out to be safe short term and will buy one asap,Ive only used the bike a few times without the stat in,The rad had a recore late last year and all flushed out and pump cleaned and checked,Was just asking why the fan comes on when the needle is so far over to the right and if the fan were to fail to come on you could soon boil the bike,Anyway am going to fit a switch so when am stuck in scarboro traffic on a hot summer day i can control the fan so to keep the needle in centre as i have a fear of over heating and a fear of forking out £2000 for a new rotor !Also i do still run with a 100/1 mix and check that the auto lube is working by checking oil usage,

glenn it is false economy to run with out a stat.on hot days the entire cooling system will heat up and boil the stat is there for a reason i.e when engine coolant gets to hot the stats opens and allows cooler coolant from the radiator to enter the system and the hot coolant back into the rad to be cooled by air and the fan so you always have a supply of cooler coolant.you risk running to hot and over heating everything also it can over pressure and blow pipes seals core plugs etc regards mike

Hi Glenn, the only time my fan comes on is when needle is right over right hand side of guage, I check to see if it works after a long stand otherwise dont bother.
The only time the fan has come on and stayed on for a long time was last year on the way to Bakewell Show did about 25mile in slow traffic with lots of traffic lights, weather was warm and the heat coming off the engine was frightening but needle never went into the red and as soon as I got a bit of speed up needle dropped back to the normal running mark, as long as the fan comes in and the temp does not go into the red I wouldn't worry too much.
Regards Stuart.

Ok point taken but reading other posts on classic or older bikes sites its all been debated before ,One member wrote: Most everywhere in engineering, temperature is a factor in premature failure, so imo, keeping the engine in it's normal operating range can only be a good thing. One thing for sure there is little chance of over heating going on as its so cold here again,What summer,!

I added a switch to mine to do exactly what you are talking about. Mine never overheated, I just didn't like to see the needle that far over. We have another bike that has the same done to it.

You might also check that the voltage regulator for the temp gauge is putting out the right amount of voltage. If this is off meter reading would be wrong.

The fan switch fitted, No you do not need it but the traffic lights and traffic here in the summer is bad and when the temp gauge goes past midway its on,Now back to the other subject: Do we need two sets of points,

I put in a fan thermoswitch from a Honda CRX, don't remember the year but was probably the same part for the life of that car model. The CRX thermoswitch looks identical to and has same threads as the re5 switch, but I am pretty sure it comes on earlier. I never had an actual RE5 switch that worked, mine was failed when I got the bike so I can't say for certain that is the case. I will try and check this weekend but I am pretty sure the fans come on when the temperature needle points barely past the vertical line right in the center. Might be a good update for those looking to get fans on earlier without having to put in a toggle switch.

Yup, just rode in to work this morning and fan comes on when temp needle is pointing straight up at the nearly vertical line.

Well that is good news, Will look in to fitting one soon, Must be safer than coming on close to red like the Suzuki one does ?
