Some of you may have seen or even bid on the RE-5A in Lincoln Nebraska that was on the Bay but I ended up winning it. I made the drive from KC to Lincoln yesterday and picked it up (about a 420 mile round trip). It needs some work but it is in pretty decent shape, but it will go on the back burner for a bit while I continue to work on the M. At least I have it. ANY RE-5 rarely comes up for sale around here. You have to figure I saved probably around $400 to $500 in shipping costs. So that is a good thing. And it is a touring and has the tips. It also has the fairing, seat and backrest, they just aren't on the bike. It also has bags but I don't think they are the correct Suzuki ones. Does anyone know how many tourings they made? I hope my rude friend in Wichita that wouldn't answer any of my questions sees this. His bike might be sitting in my garage instead of this one. The guy in Lincoln from whom I purchased this bike was an absolute pleasure to deal with and it turns out he is an avid bike collector. What a great transaction! Tomo

Thanks guys!
I got to play with it some today and found the wiring harness to be in somewhat poor condition, some wires not plugged in, some broken, some misrouted and most of the switch contacts dirty. I spent a fair amount of time on that.
The ignition squeals and I have spark. I pulled the spark plug (it came out cleanly) and shot some oil in there. Cranked it over and it sounded OK. I hooked up my compression gauge (minus the schrader valve) and it bounced around 175 psi, which seems high to me but maybe it is because of the oil I shot in there.
I hooked up a remote gas tank and put a little gas with some oil in it and tried to start it. The carb float is either stuck or sunk because gas came out the top of the carb. I have a valve on my remote tank so I shut off the gas flow. I cranked it over and it hit a few times and then it started. You talk about oil smoke! It will run for anywhere from about 2 seconds to about 10 seconds and then die. It sounds good though and my proper must not be complete junk. I need to pull the carb and go through that. The oil light goes out, so I have some oil pressure.
My front brake doesn't work so I might look at that next, even just rolling it around the garage sucks not to have the brake.

That is a nice find. Here's the original brochure which features the bags. Give you an idea if you've got the same ones.

You'll keep.

I always thought that was one skinny model on the back there. No room for the sissy bar.

I thought I read that Suzuki made about 200 touring kits. I had a set of muffler tips that were coveted by an RE5 guru in Yakima who was so generous and helpful in my efforts that I gave them to him. He has a barn full of RE5's, including some with the fairings, and I gotta say that they did not seem to hold up very well. Most of the ones he had showed plenty of stress damage and cracks. What I'm hoping to find is a Jacwal superwedge. It would make my weird bike even weirder.....

My fairing was used when I got it and had at some point been down on the left side so it hadn't been cossetted. This was repaired during the repaint and it's held up very well over about 12 years.
I've ridden the bike pretty hard over some truly awful roads and what I did notice after one pretty rough weekend were stress fractures in the fairing around the blinker mount points.
But they seem to be just cracks in the gelcoat and not structural.
I try not to put much weight in the fairing pockets as the amount the top half bounces around over rough roads is a bit of a wonder. I've seen people clamp the upper mount bracket to the radiator crash bar but thinking about it, I reckon that this would transmit more stress to the fibreglass. The flexing of that heavy steel mount is probably absorbing some stress and it ain't likely to break.
All in all I've been pretty impressed with it considering.

Wayne, the later lower mounts were gusseted at the corners, I did a stronger gusset with no ill effects on cracking on my A Model. The stronger mounts were a result of the fairing hitting the M Model instrument cluster. As thoroughly as the Re5s were tested, the accessories didn't get such a rigorous testing.

Interesting, I checked mine and there is no gussetting per se, just the flat bar on the top welded at right angles to the mount plate.
I first heard about the fairings only in 2000 when I came across an article by a US journo "Beta" testing them for Suzuki. Obviously they didn't listen because he made suggestions (such as fixing the crappy locks) that they didn't do anything about.
We never got them here in OZ. I called Sam in 2000 and I think he was having me on a bit when he said "I think I've got one or two". I've subsequently been to RR and seen fairings lined up and virtually disappearing into the distance.
